AI-Enabled Clinical Decision Support for Osteoarthritis Precision Diagnosis and Treatment

As populations age, osteoarthritis is becoming one of the leading causes of pain, disability, and reduced independence among older adults. Yet many patients still receive similar treatments, even though the disease can progress very differently from one person to another. This project, AI-Enabled Clinical Decision Support for Osteoarthritis Precision Diagnosis and Treatment, aims to change that.

By using artificial intelligence, the project links patient symptoms and medical images with what is happening deep inside the joint—at the cellular level. Studying how individual cells behave as osteoarthritis develops helps explain why some patients deteriorate faster than others. AI plays a crucial role by bringing together these complex layers of information and turning them into practical insights for doctors.

The result is a smarter, more personalised approach to care—helping clinicians diagnose osteoarthritis earlier, predict disease progression, and choose treatments that better match each patient’s condition. Beyond improving care for ageing societies, this work lays the groundwork for future AI-driven healthcare solutions, where understanding disease at its biological roots leads to longer, healthier lives.
